Carl Sandburg called it the “city of big shoulders.” But on Saturday, April 2, 2016, it became the city of the big W as the Chicago Wellesley Club welcomed a sold-out crowd of some 200 alumnae and guests to celebrate the 125th anniversary of its founding and the Chicago launch of the Campaign for Wellesley.
In honor of the anniversary, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel declared April 2 “Chicago Wellesley Club Day.” The event, held at the University Club of Chicago, was graced with the aforementioned big W, sent from the College for the occasion. (The huge letter appeared first at the gala launching the campaign on campus last October.)
The celebratory program included panel discussions with speakers ranging from the class of 1950 to 2010. After a festive luncheon, journalist Lynn Sherr ’63 interviewed President H. Kim Bottomly about her vision for the College—which includes educating women to be “equal partners with men in running the world.”
Attendees also enjoyed a “speed meet” to make new alumnae connections speed-dating style. Mezzo soprano Susan Stetson ’78 sang “America the Beautiful,” accompanied by Deborah Moldover ’09 on piano.
It was an inspirational day—and a great party—says Susan Lohin, the WCAA’s director of alumnae connections. “Chicago is one of our most active clubs and executed a very special 125th anniversary celebration. The club’s volunteers are truly dedicated and valued leaders who understand the importance of educating women.”
