Wellesley Crew won the 2022 NCAA DIII Rowing National Championship on May 28 in Sarasota, Fla. It is the second time since 2016 that the program captured the national title. The Blue finished in second in both the Varsity 8+ (V8+) and Second Varsity 8+ (2V8+) Grand Finals to place first in the team standings with 51 points.
Although both boats placed second in their individual races, because of the NCAA scoring system, the Wellesley team ended up winning the entire championship. “It was a fitting way to win the national championship for us,” says team member Katherine “KB” Ball ’22. “Neither boat could do it without the other. It’s reflective of how we are as a team, and why every single person on it matters.”
Also bringing home big honors for Wellesley was Ari Marks ’22, who was named the National Women’s Track Athlete of the Year for the 2022 NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field season. Marks is the third Wellesley student-athlete to receive Division III National Athlete of the Year honors, joining diver Maura Sticco-Ivins ’18 and golfer Kim Eaton ’11. Marks earned a near 11-second victory in the 5,000 meters and a 27-second triumph in the 10,000 meters, winning the national championship in both events.
Go, Blue!
