You won’t be shocked to learn that I’m an enthusiastic reader. This means that in my family’s small house, we’ve had to get creative with book storage. In our half bath, we installed a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf and dubbed the space the “paperback bathroom.”

Naturally, many of our books are by Wellesley authors. To name just a few, there’s The Diamond in the Window, one of my childhood favorites, by Jane Gillson Langton ’44; Good Grief: On Loving Pets, Here and Hereafter by E.B. Bartels ’10, which has the special distinction of being written by a friend and coworker; and The Wedding Date, the warm and funny debut by Jasmine Guillory ’97, who graces the cover of this magazine. There are a lot of Wellesley writers. It can seem there are two types of alums—those who have written a book, and those who will write a book.

For those of you in the latter category, or who are simply curious about the inner workings of the rapidly changing publishing industry, I direct you to Catherine O’Neill Grace’s feature story, “So You Want to Write a Book.” Grace takes us on the journey from first draft to agent to editor to bookseller, introducing us to talented and passionate alumnae who work on each step of bringing books into the world.

Here at Wellesley, we’re celebrating our own publishing milestone. In collaboration with our designers, Hecht/Horton Partners, we’ve redesigned the print alumnae magazine to reflect the brand refresh the College is currently undertaking. If you receive the print magazine, you’ll notice a bold new color palette, a fresh suite of varied and expressive fonts (including a more readable font for the text of our stories), and photography that celebrates spontaneous moments on campus and beyond. Our goal, and the College’s, is to capture the excitement and energy of Wellesley today. (If you would like to check out the new print format, you can opt in to receive the print magazine here.)

I hope the magazine continues to remind you of the places and people at the College that have played an important role in your own lives, whether you graduated 80 years ago or last May.

We’d love to hear what you think. Write to us at magazine@wellesley.edu.
