With a Little Help from Her Friends

Zaria Bunn ’23, a theatre studies major and women’s and gender studies minor from Asheville, N.C., won the 128th annual Hooprolling race by a comfortable margin.

She did have a little bit of experience before the race. “I had a very silly practice with some friends the night before,” she says. “We were hanging out for a friend’s birthday and decided to go walk the course, since we hadn’t been on the route before.”

One of the College’s Sexual Health Educators (SHEs)—peer educators who work with the Office of Student Wellness to provide medically accurate and inclusive education and outreach—Bunn credits her win to the underclass SHEs who got up at 7 a.m. to save senior SHEs spots. “I practiced partly because they were getting up so early to save us a spot in line,” Bunn says.

After graduation, Bunn plans to move to New York City to pursue acting—perhaps with a little luck on her side, thanks to the Hooprolling win.
