The Student Lens: Wintersession
During the month of January, with first-semester exams and papers finished, students fanned out around the world for academic research, internships, time with family, or just plain fun.
Chelsea Kim ’17, a junior psychology major studying abroad in Denmark, traveled to Abisko in northern Sweden. Chasing the Northern Lights, know as “the Green Lady” by locals, she ventured into Abisko National Park, within the Arctic Circle. She took this photo at 11 p.m. while grilling sausages over a fire.
Sophomore Lauren Dennis headed home to her family, who are currently posted in Sicily. She shot this scene while hiking along the Amalfi Coast near the town of Positano.
Jessie Feng ’19 traveled with the swimming and diving team to Puerto Rico for training. She snapped this shot on a day off, which was spent scuba diving.
Kathryn Leahy and her family took an impromptu trip to New York City, and one of the places she requested to stop was the Metropolitan Museum. “It has a world-renowned collection of gorgeous art and artifacts,” she says, “but it’s easy to forget the truly stunning architecture of the building itself. This is an image of my favorite room. The lighting inside took my breath away.”
Amelia McClure ’16 spent her Wintersession in Arctic Sweden doing research on carbon cycling and climate change, thanks to a grant from a Pamela Koehler Daniels ’59 Fellowship. “As you can see from these pictures,” she says, “it is very cold.”
Cecilia Valdez ’19 visited Eva Ducker ’19 (pictured) in California, and the two of them headed to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.
Grace Williams ’16 also spent time in the Big Apple. “I love going into New York City for the culture, diversity, and people,” she says. “Every time I go into the city, I always take the train into Grand Central Station. I find that this photo really captures everything about New York that I adore.”
At home in the San Francisco area, Julia Monaco ’19 enjoyed the “relatively balmy winter nights, when you can drive up Twin Peaks mountain to appreciate the skyline with a camera in hand and good friends next to you.”
Adele Clifford ’16 visited a Civil War reenactment at Historical Latta Plantation in Huntersville, N.C. “After seven years of living abroad in Europe and Asia,” she says, “I have just returned to my home state of North Carolina. I return at a time when questions of American history, Southern heritage, and race relations are in the headlines. Also in the headlines is the question of how symbols, symbols such as the Confederate battle flag shown in this image, may be publicly displayed and used….”
Hiya Vazirani ’19, at home in her native India, visited Rishikesh, at the foot of the Himalayas, on the banks of the River Ganges.
