At the end of the fall 2021 semester, a short punch list remained, but the completion of the Science Complex—the largest construction project the College has undertaken in more than a century—was in sight. The building was on schedule to be open for spring semester classes—on time and on budget. This photo shows the new Chao Foundation Innovation Hub’s first floor. The open, light-filled hub provides collaborative and interdisciplinary spaces for learning, teaching, and gathering. To the left is the Shared Faculty Research Lab for Environmental Science, with a glass exterior that embodies one of the aims of the new complex’s design: to make the wonders of scientific investigation and discovery visible and accessible to the entire campus community. The woodwork in the Chao Foundation Innovation Hub is fashioned from a laminated timber sourced from sustainably managed forests. “I look forward to witnessing the extraordinary teaching, mentoring, research, and innovation that our faculty, staff, and students—across all disciplines—will undertake in the new complex as they work to solve some of the world’s most urgent problems,” says President Paula Johnson.
